Pakistan Turns the Corner without War or Revolution

www.supportimrankhan.orgPakistanis are a hardy and pragmatic people.  Recently, exhibiting some signs of a true democracy, they have probably averted some of the worse outcomes being discussed only a few months ago.  We'll discuss some of the recent events here:

These are the tree observations that lead us to believe that the U.S. will abandon its hostile attitude in order to exit Afghanistan in an orderly manner:

  • Drone attacks on Pakistan are becoming a political liability both in Pakistan and the West
  • Grudging respect for Pakistani military among Western defense thinkers
  • Internal political stability that can withstand major shocks

Anti-Muslim News Corp Comeuppance

The Globe and Mail writes:

The moral outrage is as thick as Devon cream. But this story is about much more than corrupt police and a media culture run amok. It’s about power, hypocrisy and revenge. It’s about opportunism and political calculation. And most of all, it’s about payback. In Britain, Rupert Murdoch is widely reviled as an evil genius who’s been clobbering the competition and terrorizing the political class for decades. And now, he’s getting his comeuppance.

In addition to all this, News Corp, its newspapers and TV stations (including Sun and Fox) and Rupert Murdoch himself, were the biggest tarnishers of Muslim identity in the world.  While the Islamophobia in the Western media will not be significantly reduced by these events, it is heartening to see that lies and hypocrisy are based on negative forces that eventually, and automatically, dismantle their purveyors.

Lessons from Greek Financial Woes

The country that is widely considered to be the cradle of Western civilisation is bankrupt.  Its bonds are now rated lower than any other country in the world.  With a population of only 11 million, the country that was once regarded as an antidote to Turkey by traditional European powers is not even a shadow of its former self.  Without discussing much about what led to this, let us see what lessons we can learn from this situation?

Reality Check about Christians in Pakistan

Listening to the commercial media in Western countries, one can be forgiven for thinking that in countries like Iraq or Pakistan, there is a Klashinkov-toting Muslim around every corner hunting down Christians and other non-Muslims.

On my last trip to Pakistan, I stayed in one of largest Christian neighbourhoods in Pakistan, which has an approximately fifty-fifty Christian-Muslim population.  And, in line with the overt religiosity of Pakistanis, I was awakened on Sunday morning with sound from the Sunday mass disturbing the neighbourhood, just as Muslim events do.

The Pete "McCarthy" King Inquisition

InquisitionRepresentative Pete King is using his position on the Homeland Security committee of the United States Congress to hold hearings on homegrown 'Islamic Radicalization'.

We are not the first ones to use the 'McCarthy' label on Rep. King. In a pot-kettle exchange during a public falling-out with ally and Islamophobe Steve Emerson , it was Mr. Emerson who labelled King's decision to not invite him as reeking of McCarthyism. In more than one way, events have overtaken the hearing, and it promises to underwhelm.

Bush's Memoirs ignite Torture Debate in UK

People in the UK are debating whether information received from the United States through torture of Al-Qaeda captives was necessary to 'protect' lives.  While protecting citizens' lives should be a government's first priority, this country has had the proud history of sacrificing the lives of its young men in battles over principles and the direction where humanity was headed.

Moral Relativism post-WWII and post-USSR: Fareed Zakaria returns ADL Award

You just cannot get more secular and mainstream and politically savvy than Fareed Zakaria.? He has returned the award for journalism that he received a few years ago from the ADL (Anti-Defamation League).? He has given his reasons, among which are:

"You are choosing to use your immense prestige to take a side that is utterly opposed to the animating purpose of your organization"
